Frognal, Hampstead, London NW3: completed work by LACD

Project

Frognal: Victorian Flat Refurbishment, Hampstead

A two-bedroom flat in a Victorian building in Hampstead was comprehensively refurbished. The brief was to bring it up to contemporary living standards while keeping, and where needed restoring, its Victorian character.

Project facts

  • Location: Frognal, Hampstead, London NW3
  • Property: two-bedroom flat in a Victorian building
  • Work: comprehensive refurbishment
  • Services: refurbishment, joinery

Scope of works

Refurbishment

  • Refurbishment of all rooms to a contemporary standard

Period features

  • Retention and restoration of Victorian period features

Acoustics and joinery

  • Soundproofing between the flat and its neighbours
  • Bespoke joinery throughout

What mattered on this project

  • Keeping the period character. In a Victorian conversion, the cornices, proportions, doors and floors are what make the flat. New work was designed around them rather than replacing them.
  • Sound between flats. Converted Victorian buildings rarely have the acoustic separation people expect today. Upgrading it is one of the most noticeable improvements a refurbishment can make.
