Duncan Terrace, Islington, London N1: completed work by LACD

Project

Duncan Terrace: Period Home Refurbishment in Islington

A period home on Duncan Terrace in Islington was refurbished room by room. The lounge, main bedroom and entertainment room were given new floors, limewashed walls, reworked joinery and new lighting, with a calm, natural palette throughout.

  • Ceiling lights removed, with the two pendants over the dining table kept and reinstated

Lounge joinery

  • Bespoke full-height pine cupboards with hinged doors and matching panels, internal shelving and a tall section with a coat rail

Main bedroom

  • Carpet removed and limestone-effect floor tiles laid on a prepared subfloor
  • Walls and ceiling finished in two coats of Bauwerk limewash
  • Full-height cupboards either side of the bed cut down to bedside-table height, keeping the lower storage, with new timber tops
  • Two pendant lights fitted symmetrically either side of the bed

Entertainment room

  • Carpet removed and limestone-effect floor tiles laid
  • Walls finished in high-quality matt emulsion
  • Wall lights removed, terminations made safe and walls made good

What mattered on this project

  • Working with the underfloor heating. The new floorboards were chosen to suit the existing underfloor heating system, which stayed in place.
  • A consistent limewash finish. Two coats of Bauwerk limewash give the walls and ceilings an even, textured finish across the lounge and bedroom.
  • Reworking joinery instead of replacing it. The bedroom cupboards were cut down to bedside height and given new timber tops, keeping their storage.
